The 2019 U20s World Rugby Championship kicks off tomorrow (4 June), as representative sides from across the world come together to play in the twelfth edition of the age-grade tournament, held in Argentina.

France will travel across the Atlantic looking to defend their title, but will face fierce competition from the 11 other teams, not least from this year’s Oceania champions Australia and Six Nations Grand Slam winners Ireland.

Only four teams have lifted the trophy is the competitions history – New Zealand, South Africa, England and France – so Carl Hogg’s side head into the tournament with work to do.

Scotland feature in Pool C of the competition, alongside last year’s bronze medallists South Africa, six-time winners New Zealand and Georgia, and they will begin their run against South Africa.

Looking ahead to the competition, Scotland U20 caption Connor Boyle said: “All the boys are looking forward to the challenge.

“At camp in St Andrews, Hoggy talked about how, as Scottish people, we’re always against the odds but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“We like to take on that underdog role and the boys are looking forward to pulling off some shocks.”

On captaining the side, Connor said: “It’s a real honour.

“I really enjoy being able to get the boys up for training and games.

“There are some challenges – keeping boys in line and making sure that standards are high throughout the team – but there are a great bunch of leaders around me.”

Asked who might be the stand-out performers for Scotland, the captain said: “Jack Blain has made his professional debut this year and he’s a racehorse on the wing – he can run in tries from anywhere.

“We’ve also got a strong front row in Murphy Walker and Euan McLaren, who will hold the scrum down but are also quite good in the loose.

“Also, the guy who holds it all together, Ross Thompson, he’s a very good player with an old head on a young body – he’s a very important player for us.
