Amajita will hope to get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start when they take on Albicelestes on Saturday

The South Africa national under-20 side are set to begin their World Cup Group F campaign with a clash against Argentina.

Amajita go into the clash knowing all too well the difficulty of coming up against the two-time winners of the tournament, and in a group which also includes European powerhouse Portugal and South Korea, starting the campaign with a positive result could be key.

However, heading into the game, both nations have all the reason to be optimistic. Amajita spent their preparations in Saudi Arabia before drawing 1-1 with Ukraine, while the South Americans beat Honduras ahead of the tournament.

Under the leadership of head coach Thabo Senong and assistant Helman Mkhalele, a lot will be expected of the South Africans.

Senong called up a strong 21-man squad and players such as Lyle Foster, Leicester City’s Khanya Leshabela and Ajax Amsterdam’s Leo Thethani could have a major role to play in terms of attack.

While the squad does not consist of many first-team regulars, Senong will hope to get the best out of the players.

During the qualifiers where Amajita claimed a bronze medal at the Africa U20 Cup of Nations, but they only scored two goals and It was their resoluteness at the back that eventually took them over the line.

One player, who is certainly not short on confidence is Sibusiso Mabiliso. The youngster featured 21 times during AmaZulu’s league campaign and is a bright prospect for the future.

A massive bow though will be the absence of Kaizer Chiefs attacker Nkosingiphie Ncgobo, who has been ruled out of the tournament with an injury.

Amajita will undoubtedly miss the midfielder but will rely on others to fill the void.

Match Preview

Saturday’s clash will be the very first meeting between the two sides at junior level in a competitive match.

Argentina though are favourites on paper and have won three of their last five games in all competitions.

The 2019 World Rugby U20 Championship has delivered its fair share of thrills and spills over the two opening game days and as teams prepare for the third and final matchday of the group stage, there are plenty of runners and riders to join Australia in the semi-finals, the only side so far to book their place.

Australia‘s comprehensive wins over Italy and Ireland have secured them a semi-final, with their 10 points in Pool B unsurpassable, thanks to their win over Ireland, which gives them the head-to-head advantage over the U20 Six Nations Grand Slam winners, should Ireland manage to match them on 10 points following their game with Italy on Wednesday. With Australia set to finish against England, with the perennial powerhouses at this level having performed poorly this season, there is a good chance that Jason Gilmore’s team could secure another win and a high seeding for the semi-finals.

Staying in Pool B, Ireland’s slim chances of qualifying revolve around them securing a bonus point win against Italy, which will take them to 10 points and open up the possibility of qualifying as the best runner up. With a current points difference of -12 and both South Africa and New Zealand sitting on 10 points in Pool C and boasting points differences of over +50, it would take a large swing for Ireland to have a shot, with a differential of over 60 having to be manufactured from an Ireland win over Italy and the game between South Africa and New Zealand. Furthermore, it would also require France to beat Argentina in Pool A, or for the hosts to beat France so comprehensively as to bring down the reigning World Rugby U20 Champions’ points difference from +35 to a figure that Ireland could catch.

England’s inability to pick up a bonus point in their narrow win over Italy cost them a shot at the semi-finals, whilst Italy sit winless after two games and will be hoping to spring an upset against Ireland in order to book a more favourable seeding in the 4th-8th or relegation brackets off the competition’s playoff stage.

Pool A is a little more straightforward than the complex mix of requirements in Pool B. France top the group on 10 points and a win or draw against Argentina will be enough to see them through as pool winners. Argentina have six points and a win – whilst denying France a losing or try bonus point – would be enough to see them through as pool winners, or a bonus point win over France would be enough for Argentina to top the group, should France manage to pick up a bonus point in that game, thanks to Argentina then having the head-to-head advantage over France in both scenarios. In the unlikely event that France were to lose to Argentina, but still pick up two bonus points, they would finish top of the pool.

Topping the pool is not the only way through to the semi-finals for Argentina, however, whose six points give them a shot at the best runner up spot, too. A win would take them to 10 points, potentially putting them into a points difference battle with Ireland, should they win against Italy, and the loser of the New Zealand vs South Africa game. A bonus point win would take them beyond any total Ireland can amass, as well as beyond the loser in the New Zealand vs South Africa game, presuming the loser were unable to pick up any bonus points. Should the loser pick up a bonus point, it would go down to battle of points difference and Argentina’s current tally of +22 gives them a puncher’s chance.

The other match in Pool A sees Wales take on Fiji, with Wales’ total of four points, like England, ruling them out of a chance at the semi-finals. Fiji have no points to show for their first two games and will be keen to try and pick some up in order to avoid going into the relegation bracket as the 12th overall seed.

It’s winner takes all in Pool C, with both New Zealand and South Africa tied on 10 points and set to play each other for top spot. Even their points differences are almost inseparable, with South Africa on +52 and New Zealand on +51. In the case of a draw, South Africa would go through as group winners thanks to that slight points difference advantage and New Zealand would qualify as the best runner up, with no other team in the competition capable of making the 12-point mark that they would be on. Should one of the two sides in a draw manage to grab a try bonus point and the other were not to, then they would qualify as pool winners.

Should the more likely outcome of a winner and loser occur, then the previously mentioned permutations of points difference and losing bonus points could be important. If the loser picks up one losing bonus point, Ireland, no matter their points difference, can no longer catch them, whilst if they pick up two, Argentina can similarly no longer catch them, no matter their points difference.

The other game of Scotland vs Georgia will have no bearing on the semi-finals, although with Georgia sharing Fiji’s fate of currently being on zero points, it does have intriguing connotations for the upcoming relegation bracket of the playoffs.

These final group games will be played on Wednesday, before the playoff stage begins on Monday.

England men U20s head coach Steve Bates has named his side to play Australia in their final pool fixture of the World Rugby U20 Championship in Sante Fe, Argentina (KO 7.30PM, live on World Rugby platforms).

Bates has made seven changes to the side that defeated Italy in their second pool fixture.

James Kenny, who won his first cap as a replacement in that match against Italy, starts at loosehead with prop Joe Heyes returning to the front row.

Joel Kpoku is named at lock, while Ted Hill returns at flanker against unbeaten Australia.

Fly half Manu Vunipola starts the fixture, along with inside centre Cameron Redpath and wing Ollie Sleightholme in the other changes.

England lost their opening match of the Championship to Ireland, and despite victory over Italy cannot advance through to the top four of the tournament.

Arron Reed (Sale Sharks) has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament through injury and will be replaced by Ollie Hassell-Collins (London Irish), while Alfie Barbeary (Wasps Rugby) will also miss the rest of the World Rugby U20 Championship through suspension.

This is a big fixture for us and the players know we need to raise the level and pace of our game against a good Australia side," said Bates.

“We always enjoy matches against southern hemisphere opposition, it’s not often these players get the opportunity to face the likes of Australia or New Zealand and they are very excited about that.

“The players feel like they haven’t played their best rugby yet in this competition and the challenge for them is to play with a bit more continuity in the game. We trained very well yesterday with that in mind and I’m hoping to see an exciting performance from us on Wednesday.

Captain Kianu Kereru-Symes returns to  lead the New Zealand under-20 rugby team with coach Craig Philpott ringing the changes for the must-win World Cup clash with South Africa.

Kereru-Symes will start at hooker and will be joined by Ollie Norris and Fletcher Newell in the front row for the final pool play clash with the Junior Springboks in Rosario, Argentina on Thursday morning (NZ time).

Lock Tupou Vaa'i is the only New Zealand forward who started in the 52-33 win over Scotland last weekend.

Samipeni Finau, Kohan Herbert and Devan Flanders combine as a dynamic loose forward trio for the second time after impressing in the 45-13 victory over Georgia.

In the backline Fergus Burke, Etene Nanai-Seturo and Billy Proctor retain their starting positions from the Scottish match.

Philpott said the team was ready for the challenge that South Africa would present.

"We have made a number of changes ahead of this match and there is a real sense of excitement in the group about going out and putting in a strong performance.

"It doesn't take much to motivate a group when they are pulling on the black jersey against South Africa, its important the team channel that energy and stick to our structures because we know it will be a hugely physical encounter."

The extended bench has plenty of fire power and Philpott said it will play a crucial role in the match.

"There has been a lot of learning around how to manage the extended bench, we are able to react to how the game is developing to make sure the players we bring on are in a position to make a real impact."

The New Zealand Under 20 side currently sit second, on points difference, behind South Africa in their pool. A win tomorrow would confirm their place in the semi-finals otherwise they would have to wait on other results to potentially qualify as the best finishing second place team.

MATCHDAY PREVIEW – The Round of 16 continues on Tuesday 4 June with three matches on the card, including an Asian derby between Korea Republic and a Japan side whose high-energy pressing sparked their solid showing in the group phase. The Taeguk Warriors started a bit slower at Poland 2019 and needed a signature win over Argentina to progress. The Asian rivals both went out at this stage of the competition in 2017.

France were given a stern test by Mali in their last outing and will need to be back to their best for what promises to be an exciting tie against the USA. Bernard Diomede’s side impressed more than most in the group phase, while the Stars and Stripes play a free-flowing attacking game, all of which should make for an entertaining spectacle. USA coach Tab Ramos will have to make do without midfielders Chris Durkin and Alex Mendez, both suspended.

There is another interesting clash of styles in store in the day’s closing match between Argentina and Mali. With his side already qualified for the last 16, Albiceleste coach Fernando

Batista made personnel changes for their final group stage match against Korea Republic. That should mean fresher legs for Argentina, but the Eagles undoubtedly have the weapons to disrupt the South Americans’ possession game.

The games
Tuesday 4 June, local times

Round of 16
Japan-Korea Republic (Lublin, 17:30)
France-USA (Bydgoszcz, 17:30)
Argentina-Mali (Bielsko-Biala 20:30)
